How to install the PS2 emulator

Download PCSX2

Get the build for your operating system above. Stable is recommended for most players; choose Nightly only if you need a very recent fix.

Install or extract

Windows: extract the archive or run it portable. macOS: move the app to Applications. Linux: use the AppImage or install the Flatpak.

Add your PS2 BIOS

Dump the BIOS from a PlayStation 2 you own and select it in the first-run setup wizard. This is a one-time step.

Best settings for a first run

Use the Stable build unless a specific Nightly fix is needed. Use the Automatic graphics API unless you are troubleshooting. Use file memory cards (8 MB) for maximum compatibility. Use the SDL input source for controllers. Start at native resolution, then increase it after the game runs correctly. Use per-game settings instead of changing global settings for one title. Keep normal in-game saves in addition to save states, and keep GPU drivers updated.

Performance

  • Try Vulkan on modern systems.
  • Avoid excessive internal resolution on weaker GPUs.
  • Use software mode only when accuracy is needed and the CPU can handle it.
